Zhen Guo is a leader and pioneering force in American Asian contemporary ink art. Born in Rizhao, Shandong, she trained at the Fine Arts Department of Shandong Art School (1976) and the China Academy of Art (1982), later joining its faculty in the Chinese Painting Department. Her artistic path expanded across continents when she continued her studies at the San Francisco Art College in 1986, followed by a visiting scholarship at York University College of Art in Canada. In 1988, she founded the Zhen Guo Art Studio in New York, establishing an enduring presence in the international art world.

Guo often describes her life as shaped by “two worlds”—learning to paint in China, but coming into her own and confronting the world in the United States. This duality fuels her work and her commitment to elevating contemporary female perspectives as both curator and ink artist.

A participant in major international exhibitions, Guo has long been dedicated to advancing contemporary female art. Her work has been promoted by leading auction houses such as Sotheby’s, and she has curated and contributed to landmark exhibitions in China, the United States, and Korea. Today, she remains a vital voice in global conversations around ink art, gender, and contemporary expression.

You can find more of Zhen’s work at FRIEDA at 320 Walnut Street or check out her website.
