Manuel Hernandez redraws the history of his ancestors and reconnects with his Indigenous roots from a Latinx perspective. He creates large-scale works that integrate the past with contemporary life. His subjects are the current brown leaders he finds in the Latinx community who have personally inspired him. He captures their thoughts and paints them in an elegant, confident style. The resulting artworks are shaped like the animal hide paintings of Indigenous people. Their large scale recalls the ancient fresco murals found in the temples of Teotihuacan, Mexico. Both of these artistic traditions break away from European traditions and are connected to Native American painting history.
Manuel Hernandez was selected for A closer look at FRIEDA (October 2023 - November 2023). He also shared his artistic way of thinking during the Meet the artist event on November 1, 2023.
Manuel Hernandez was born in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, one generation after his family migrated to the capital city from Sultepequito, a small pueblo. Like many before them and to this day, his family came to the United States seeking a better education and a better life for the next generation. Hernandez started painting at a young age and later developed his skills through higher education, earning a BFA at Indiana University Southeast (Albany, IN) and an MFA at the New York Academy of Art (NYC). His work has been collected by 21c museum hotels and the Gochman family’s Forge Project, which fosters and collects Indigenous art. He currently lives in NYC, working out of a studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, where he continues to make paintings inspired by his surrounding environment and the history of Indigenous people in America.
You can find more of Manuel's work at FRIEDA, 320 Walnut Street or his website.
