Multidimensional artist Michael “Hooker” Rex creates biomorphic wire sculptures inspired by the fluid forms of living organisms. His pieces shift with light and air, transforming throughout the day. Rex calls them “floating forms,” reflecting their buoyant, weightless presence. At night, when illuminated, they cast intricate, ever-changing shadows that extend across surrounding walls and spaces.
Each sculpture is handcrafted from 14-20-gauge wire, looped into continuous, flowing structures. Some are formed in anodized aluminium wire, while others use insulated copper to preserve the material’s natural color, adding subtle tonal variation. Rex’s inspiration is deeply personal. Childhood memories of watching his mother and grandmother knit instilled an early appreciation for line and form, later expanded by a 2017 exhibition of Ruth Asawa.
With a background in dance, music, television, and a global career in fashion, Rex brings a refined sense of movement and design to his sculptural practice.
